How to Get Rid of a "This Game Needs An Update" Message on a JTAG
How to Get Rid of a "This Game Needs An Update" Message on a JTAG By Twis7eD of InsomniacGamerZ.net. This tutorial will teach you how to rid of the message that states "this game needs an update" when you try to lauch an xex on a JTAG. The cause of this message can sometimes be because you are not updated to the newest dashboard that the game needs to run. This can easily be fixed by using this tutorial, though. Requirements: A JTAG'd Xbox 360 The xex of the game that you want to play XexTool 1. Open XexTool. XeXTool is kind of complicated (if you've never used it before). It's a CLI program. It uses command prompt instead of having a GUI like most programs. To open XexTool, we're going to have to open it in command prompt. To do this, start command prompt. On Windows 7, you need to search for CMD and it will come up. To do this, go to the start button > search bar > type "CMD" (without quotes). ![]() 2. Now that command prompt is open, we need to open XexTool in it. To do this, find where you saved XexTool to. ![]() 3. Now we're going to need to drag the XexTool.exe into command prompt. To do this, just put the folder where you saved XeXTool to side by side with command prompt and drag XexTool.exe into command prompt. Once you have done that, command prompt should look something like this: ![]() 4. Now we need to find the location of our xex. The simplest place to put it is directly in the root of your C drive. This will make it easiest to access. If you put it in the root of your C drive, then you should type: Code:
-r l C:\default.xex ![]() 5. Then press enter. 6. You should then be presented with this message: ![]() That means that you did everything correctly! Now just replace the original default.xex that you had on your JTAG before with this one and it should work perfectly fine and let you play the game without having to update. Congrats! This tutorial was made by Twis7eD of InsomniacGamerZ.net and only for InsomniacGamerZ.net This tutorial may not be ripped without the permission of me. If you rip this tutorial, then at least have the decency to give me and my website credit. This tutorial took long to make and you should not steal the credit. |

I don't think Dash Launch has the ability to launch games like this. I could be wrong, though.
I do know, though, that Dash Launch 2.08 and before do not have this built in because I am currently running 2.08 and I still have to use this method. I'll test it out later when I update to see if you're right. |

The XEX Tool Didn't work
I downloaded the XEX tool and I followed the process you explained and I get an error message.
Error writing altered xex to the default.xex. I don't know why it doesn't work for me. |

Well, you're not writing one xex to a different xex. You're only using one xex, so obviously you typed something wrong.

Make sure to remove the $SystemUpdate folder too. I forgot to mention that in the tutorial.

You must have done something wrong when patching the xex. What game are you trying to do this for? Upload the xex to mediafire and I'll do it for you.

ok Thanx! I'm trying to do Dungeon Siege 3 and Assassin's Creed 3.
I just uploaded the files to mediafire. *redacted* I named differently so it won't be confusing. Last edited by Twis7eD; 08-09-2011 at 07:43 PM.. |

Thank you very much.
I will try it today. I have a simple question, you told me to get rid of the system update folder, but in my 360 I have also an update folder should I get rid of that one too? Also when you said I must of patched it wrong, did I have to patch the XEX file before using the XEXTool? It didnt work. Anyways I think I know what the problem is. I need to update my dash for the jtag. Last edited by Corpse_Juicer; 08-10-2011 at 09:24 AM.. Reason: Automerged Double Post |

When I said you should patch the xex, I meant that you should patch it with XexTool. Patching it is just what you're doing when you're following this tutorial. And you shouldn't have to update your dash. This method is what allows people to stay on older dashboards and still play newer games. I've used it many times. Did you download these games or did you rip them to your HDD using Xexmenu/FreeStyle Dash? And are you sure both games don't work? Try again to be sure. And what kernel / dashboard are you on anyway? |

ok I didn't get rid of the system update on my hdd.
The games were downloaded from a friend and I then ripped them onto my external hdd. I only tried Dungeon Siege 3. I will try assassin's creed 3 later and give you news. Ok Results are in. I figured a few little things. When the file Default.Xex is read only the xextool won't work something you forgot to mention. So I take it off patch the file and the xex tool works. I went and rented Assassins Creed 3 and ripped it and patched it and it worked. On the other hand dungeon Siege 3 didn't work. maybe because the version my friend downloaded had a different default file type don't know. But thanx for all the help. Ahh okay. Thanks for the information. I would have never even thought to check if the file was read only. I'll have to keep that in mind. I've never experienced that issue.

Thank you so much for the invaluable tutorial. I wasted hours scouring useless threads and random instructions before finding this guide. It worked the first time around and now all my previously unplayable games are functioning properly. Much appreciated!
