There is an easy way to determine what drive you have in your console without actually fully disassembling it, all you need do is remove the faceplate (see image below; turn the console sideways with the power button facing upwards and pull outwards from the very edge of the faceplate)

Then check the hole in the front of the dvd drive, refer to the image below :

There. Saves alot of hassles with identifying your drive make, you then know what you are in for before you ever try and disemble your console though .

What, purposely leave a hole with different colored wires inside? Maybe, maybe not. They are all made by different drive manufacturers, so it would be odd for this to be a planned thing unless Microsoft specifically said to design it like this for an easy way to identify your drive.

for those visually impaired this is not for slim, as you have to open your slim console and void the warranty, totally worth it though.
